1. Objective

The objective of this grant is to encourage and support high-quality master’s thesis research in applied Geoscience by providing financial assistance to deserving students.

2. Funding Source

The grant is funded by Alumni of Department of Geology, Tribhuvan University who are currently based in Australia and is managed and administered by NSEG.

3. Number and Value of Grants.

  • Three grants will be awarded.
  • One of the three grants will be reserved for an eligible NSEG Women in Engineering Geology (WEG) member.
  • Each selected student will receive NPR 25,000.

4. Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in an MSc in any Geoscience program, including Geology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Hydrology/Hydrogeology, Geomorphology, Environmental Geoscience, Geography, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling, and related fields of Earth and environmental sciences.
  • Have an approved thesis proposal.
  • Be an NSEG member at the time of application.
  • Submit a complete application before the announced deadline.
WEG-reserved grant: One grant is reserved for an NSEG WEG member. Applicants who are NSEG members but are not yet listed as WEG members may request to be added to the NSEG WEG membership list by emailing NSEG. No separate WEG membership fee or additional payment is required.

5. Application Documents

Applicants shall submit:

  • Completed application form.
  • Thesis proposal, including proposed work plan/timeline (maximum 5 pages).
  • MSc academic transcript.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) – maximum 1 page.
  • Budget with justification.
  • Recommendation letter from the thesis supervisor.

7. Selection Committee

The Selection Committee shall consist of three members:

  • One representative nominated by the NSEG Executive Committee.
  • Two representatives nominated by the sponsors based in Australia.

The committee shall independently evaluate all eligible applications using the approved evaluation criteria and recommend the selected applicants to the NSEG Executive Committee.

8. Selection Procedure

  • Applications shall be screened for eligibility.
  • Eligible applications shall be evaluated independently by each committee member.
  • The final score shall be the average of the scores assigned by all committee members.
  • The committee may invite up to two subject-matter experts to evaluate proposals when necessary. Expert evaluation may be conducted through a blind-review process.
  • Grants shall be awarded based on merit.

9. Responsibilities of Awardees

  • Use the grant only for thesis-related research activities.
  • Acknowledge the support of the NSEG Master’s Thesis Grant in the thesis and in any publications or presentations arising from the research.
  • Submit a brief completion report after the thesis is completed.
  • Submit an electronic copy of the university-approved thesis to NSEG. The thesis will be made available for public download through the NSEG website, subject to the applicable publication/permission arrangements.
  • Enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NSEG covering the grant payment procedure and online publication of the thesis.
