Nepal Society of Engineering Geology (NSEG) is organizing National Seminar on Engineering Geology in October 20, 2024. NSEG is Nepal National Group of
International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) and this seminar is a celebration program of the 60th Anniversary of IAEG in Nepal on the occasion of Second National Engineering Geology Day (2nd NEG-Day).
NSEG is committed to elevating the standards of engineering geology through research, surveys, investigations, and by facilitating the exchange of knowledge and perspectives with national and international experts. The society also promotes scientific activities and adopts new techniques to further its goals. As a professional and scientific organization, NSEG comprises members from diverse disciplines including Engineering Geology, Geology, Geomorphology, Geography, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Disaster Risk Management. It aims to bridge the gap between geologists, engineers, and social scientists in Nepal, providing a dynamic platform for discussing and addressing geotechnical and engineering geological challenges, while supporting sustainable development planning in the country.
NSEG regularly organizes national and international symposiums, seminars, and workshops across Nepal, attracting experts, students, and professionals from related fields both domestically and internationally. The society also plans to initiate training programs in Engineering Geology for young professionals, encouraging them to work at international standards.
The NatSEG -2
To provide an additional platform for technical discussions, the Society is organizing a one-day seminar on Sunday, October 20, 2024, in Kathmandu. This event stems from the growing gaps in engineering geological practices in Nepal, as highlighted by the recent unprecedented failures of various road and hydropower projects. These incidents underscore the urgent need to elevate engineering geological studies in civil engineering projects to support Nepal’s sustainable development.
It is crucial to address and improve current practices in engineering geological investigations and related civil engineering design processes. In light of these challenges, the NSEG is organizing a seminar titled “Contemporary Engineering Geological Practices in Nepal.” The seminar will provide an opportunity to understand the government’s stance on these issues, address private sector concerns, engage in open discussions based on case studies, and formulate recommendations to expedite engineering geological clearances.
The seminar will begin with presentations from regulatory authorities and academic institutions in Nepal, followed by presentations from researchers and practitioners. The event will conclude with panel discussions aimed at framing recommendations.
Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of IAEG
As the IAEG celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, NSEG is positioning NatSEG-2 as a key event in the celebration, featuring a special IAEG Lecture as part of the seminar.
Abstract Volume
Accepted Extended Abstracts and seminar materials will be published in Volume 1, Issue 2 of the Asian Journal of Engineering Geology (AJEG). The journal’s soft copy will be accessible at www.ajeg.nseg.org.np. The full papers presented at the Workshop will be compiled and included in a regular volume of AJEG, also available for download from the website.
Call for Extended Abstracts
The Seminar Organizing Committee invites submissions of Extended Abstracts focused on research and case studies related to engineering geological and geotechnical investigations. Abstracts should not exceed two pages, including any figures and tables. Authors are encouraged to include relevant drawings, photographs, and other illustrations. Accepted abstracts will be presented in various sessions of the Workshop. Interested authors should submit their Extended Abstracts with illustrations by October 1, 2024.
